How do I edit a PDF?

Press Choose a PDF and every page opens in the editor below the title. The Full screen button gives it the whole window. With Text on, click words to change them or an empty spot to add text. Pick Links, Forms, Images, Sign, Whiteout, Annotate or Shapes for the rest, then press Save PDF.

  1. Press Choose a PDF.
  2. Click words to change them, or pick a tool along the top: Text, Links, Forms, Images, Sign, Whiteout, Annotate or Shapes.
  3. Click anything you added; the bar above it changes font, size, color or link, duplicates or deletes it.
  4. Under each page: Insert page, turn it, or delete it.
  5. Press Save PDF, then Download.

Can I change the existing text in a PDF?

Yes. With Text on, click a word or line and type. The tool covers it in the color behind it, then retypes it at the same size and in the same text color, in a sans, serif or monospace font close to the original. PDFs usually carry only the letters they use, so the exact font may differ.

Yes. Pick Links and drag a box over words or a picture, then type a web address or choose a page of the same PDF. Pick Forms for text fields, checkboxes, radio buttons, dropdowns, dates and signature boxes. They work in Adobe Reader, browsers and phone apps after you save.

Does editing make the PDF bigger?

Hardly. Edits are stored as short drawing instructions, and text adds only the letters you typed from its font. This table shows what each kind of edit added to a one-page PDF, measured with this tool's own engine when the page was built. Pictures add about their own file size.

EditAdded to the file
One line of text (12 pt, 30 letters)5.6 KB
White-out box563 bytes

Freehand stroke (100 points)1.7 KB

Does white-out remove the text underneath?

No. White-out covers text so it does not show or print, but the words stay in the file and can still be selected or copied. To remove information for good, use Redact PDF, which turns marked pages into images and checks the result. Use white-out for neat corrections, not for secrets.

Limits and fixes

  • Saved edits are part of the page; they cannot be moved again later in another app. Keep your original if you may need changes.
  • Changing existing text works on level text read left to right; scanned pages have no text to pick, so cover them with whiteout and add new text.
  • Fonts: added text uses DejaVu Sans, Serif or Mono, which cover Latin, Greek and Cyrillic letters.
  • Filling a form someone sent you is easier in Fill PDF, which shows every field ready to type in.
  • Turning a page moves your edits on it with the page; text you added keeps reading left to right.
  • Locked PDFs need their password removed first with Unlock PDF.
