How do I add page numbers to a PDF?

Press Choose a PDF. Pick a format such as Page 1 of 12, click one of the six position squares, and set the size. The preview shows the first numbered page. To leave a cover unnumbered, set Skip first pages to 1. Press Add page numbers, then Download. Your original file is not changed.

  1. Press Choose a PDF.
  2. Pick a format, or type your own Text with {n} and {total}.
  3. Click a Position square and set Size and Color.
  4. Set Start at and Skip first pages if needed.
  5. Press Add page numbers, then Download.

How do I add Page X of Y to a PDF?

Pick the Page 1 of 9 button, or type Page {n} of {total} in the Text box. {n} becomes each page's number and {total} the last number used, so a 12-page file reads Page 1 of 12 through Page 12 of 12. If you skip a cover, the total counts only the numbered pages.

How do I start page numbers on page 2 or 3?

Set Skip first pages to the number of pages to leave blank, such as 1 for a cover or 2 for a cover and contents page. Numbering then starts at 1 on the next page. To make page 3 show 3 instead, tick Count skipped pages. You can also type exact pages, such as 3-end.

Does it work on long files and mixed page sizes?

Yes. Each page gets its own position, so A4, Letter, landscape and pages turned sideways all show the number where you picked, upright. In our build test, 1000 pages were numbered Page 1 of 1000 to Page 1000 of 1000.

Run on 2026-10-16 by the site build with the tool's own code: text PDFs, Page X of Y at the bottom center.

What are page labels?

PDF readers show a page box, such as 3 of 40, at the top of the screen. If your numbers start after a cover, the printed page 1 is the reader's page 2, which confuses people. Page labels tell readers to show the same numbers as the pages, with skipped pages shown as i, ii, iii.

Limits and fixes

  • Existing footers: the tool does not move text already on the page. Check the preview and pick another position or margin if they overlap.
  • Characters in the text line: Latin, Greek and Cyrillic work; Chinese, Japanese and Arabic not yet.
  • Locked PDFs need their password removed first with Unlock PDF.
