How do I put a logo watermark on a PDF?
Choose Image, then pick your logo as a PNG or JPG. A PNG with a transparent background looks best, because only the logo shows and the page stays visible around it. Set the width as a share of the page, lower the opacity to about 20 to 30 percent for a faint mark, and pick a position.
Can a watermark be removed from a PDF?
A normal watermark is a separate layer, so someone with a PDF editor can select and delete it. To make that hard, tick Make it hard to remove: every page is turned into a picture with the watermark burned in. The trade-off is real: text can no longer be selected or searched, and files usually get larger.
Does a watermark make the PDF much bigger?
Hardly. The watermark is stored once in the file and each page only points to it. In our build test, a tiled CONFIDENTIAL watermark on all 500 pages of a text PDF added 246 KB, about 504 bytes per page.
| Pages | Before | After | Added per page |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | 22 KB | 31 KB | 918 bytes |
| 100 | 217 KB | 269 KB | 529 bytes |
| 500 | 1.1 MB | 1.3 MB | 504 bytes |
Should the watermark go over or behind the text?
Over the content is the default, with transparency so the page stays readable. It is the only choice that shows on scanned PDFs, because a scan is one solid picture that would hide anything behind it. Behind the text suits PDFs made from documents, where it looks like printed letterhead paper.
Limits and fixes
- Characters: Latin, Greek and Cyrillic work. Chinese, Japanese, Arabic and emoji are not in the watermark fonts yet.
- One watermark per run: run the tool again to add a second mark, such as a logo and a stamp.
- Locked PDFs need their password removed first with Unlock PDF.
- Removing watermarks made by others is not something this tool does.
Frequently asked questions
Is it free?
Yes, with no sign-up, no daily limit and no extra mark of ours on your file.
Can I watermark only some pages?
Yes. Type pages such as 1-3, 5 or odd in the Pages box. Leave it empty for every page.
Will links and form fields still work?
Yes, unless you choose Make it hard to remove, which turns pages into images.
Is my PDF uploaded?
No. The watermark is added in your browser and the file stays on your device.
What does the opacity setting do?
It sets how see-through the mark is. 100% is solid; 20 to 30% is a faint watermark that does not hide the text.
