When should wedding invitations be sent?

Wikipedia's entry on wedding invitations says they are typically mailed five to eight weeks before the wedding date, with a little more time for guests traveling from out of town. Choose a reply-by date that leaves time to give your caterer and venue a final head count and to finish your seating chart.

When the replies come in, plan who sits where with the seating chart maker.

How much postage does a wedding invitation need?

A flat 5 x 7 inch invitation in an A7 envelope (5-1/4 by 7-1/4 inches) mails as a letter. The USPS Domestic Mail Manual adds a nonmachinable surcharge when an envelope is square, too rigid to bend, or closed with clasps, strings or buttons. Weigh one finished invitation with its inserts at the post office before buying stamps.

The rule behind square envelopes: USPS treats a letter as nonmachinable when its length divided by its height is under 1.3 or over 2.5. A square envelope is 1.0. An A7 envelope is about 1.38, inside the range. A 5 x 7 card is also too big for postcard prices, which stop at 4-1/4 by 6 inches.

Should the date be written in words on a wedding invitation?

Formal invitations often spell out the date and time, so June 12, 2027 at 4 PM reads Saturday, the twelfth of June, two thousand twenty-seven, at four o'clock in the afternoon. Less formal invitations use numbers or a date bar. Pick In words, Date bar or Numbers under Date; the card writes the words for you.
