Why won't my HEIC photos open on Windows or upload to a website?
HEIC is newer than JPG. Windows 10 needs an extra extension to open HEIC files, according to the Library of Congress, and upload forms often list only formats such as JPG, PNG or PDF. Converting to JPG fixes both, because JPG has been the standard photo format since its file format was set in 1992.
Our guide HEIC vs JPG explains the difference and shows which browsers can display each format.
Which JPG quality should I choose?
High (92%) keeps the photo looking the same and suits printing and editing. Standard (85%) is hard to tell apart on a screen and makes smaller files. Smaller (75%) suits sending many photos by email. In our test the same photo was 454 KB at High, 344 KB at Standard and 263 KB at Smaller.
| Setting | JPG size |
|---|---|
| The HEIC file | 701 KB |
| JPG at 92% | 454 KB |
| JPG at 85% | 344 KB |
| JPG at 75% | 263 KB |
How do I stop my iPhone saving photos as HEIC?
Open Settings, then Camera, then Formats, and choose Most Compatible. New photos are then saved as JPG, while photos you already took stay HEIC. Apple notes that the High Efficiency setting saves space on the phone, so Most Compatible photos take more storage. Convert older HEIC photos with this tool when you need them as JPG.
Need the photos as a single document instead? HEIC to PDF puts them into one PDF, one photo per page.
Limits and fixes
- Live Photos and bursts convert to their main still picture.
- Very large photos over 16 megapixels are scaled down to fit what phone browsers can draw.
- Camera details such as date taken and location are left out of the JPG, which also keeps them private.
