How long can one long page be?
PDF readers handle pages up to 14,400 units, which is 200 inches, on each side, so the tool scales a longer stack down to fit. Ten Letter pages make a page 111.5 inches tall at full size. Twenty would be over the limit, so they are shown at 90% to fit the 200 inches.
The limit comes from the PDF standard's list of implementation limits, cited below. For very long documents, split the result into parts with Split PDF first.
Is combining pages the same as merging PDFs?
No. Merging joins several PDF files into one file, keeping every page as its own page. Combining pages puts several pages onto one page, so a 4-page file can become a single page with all four on it. Use Merge PDF to join files first, then this tool if you also want the pages on one sheet.
Join files with Merge PDF. To shrink pages onto another paper size without combining them, use Resize PDF.
Will the text still be sharp and searchable?
Yes. Each page is placed on the new sheet as a drawing, the same way a page is placed in a print layout, so letters stay letters and lines stay lines at any zoom. Search and copy still work. Pictures inside the pages keep their original resolution, so the file size stays close to the original.
Want each half of a book spread as its own page instead? Use Split PDF Page in Half.
Limits and fixes
- All pages on one page takes up to 16 pages; more would be too small to read. Use one long page instead.
- Form fields and comments are not carried over; flatten them first with Flatten PDF to keep them.
- Locked PDFs need their password removed first with Unlock PDF.
