Can I save a PDF page as a PNG with a transparent background?
Yes. Tick Transparent background before saving. Any area the PDF leaves unpainted, usually the paper around logos, diagrams and text, becomes see-through in the PNG. Some PDFs paint a white rectangle behind everything; those pages stay white, because the white is part of the page itself.
Is PNG bigger than JPG for PDF pages?
It depends on the page. PNG keeps every pixel exactly, which suits text and line art: in our test a text page was about the same size as PNG and as JPG, and at 300 DPI the PNG was even a little smaller. Photo pages are different: the PNG was about nine times the size of the JPG.
| Page | Resolution | PNG | JPG |
|---|---|---|---|
| Text page | 72 DPI (595 x 841) | 140 KB | 138 KB |
| Text page | 150 DPI (1240 x 1753) | 475 KB | 425 KB |
| Text page | 300 DPI (2480 x 3507) | 1015 KB | 1.1 MB |
| Photo page | 150 DPI (1240 x 1753) | 4.2 MB | 460 KB |
| Text page, transparent | 150 DPI (1240 x 1753) | 504 KB |
What resolution should I use for PDF to PNG?
For slides, websites and documents, 150 DPI is plenty: an A4 page becomes about 1240 by 1754 pixels. For printing, use 300 DPI, which doubles the width and height and makes files about four times larger. 72 DPI suits small previews and thumbnails.
How do I convert PDF to PNG on Mac or Windows?
This page works in any browser on Mac and Windows with nothing to install, and it can save many pages at once. On a Mac, Preview can also export a single page as PNG through File and Export. Windows has no built-in PDF to PNG option.
Apple describes exporting from Preview in Export PDFs and images in Preview on Mac.
Limits and fixes
- Large files at 300 DPI: a full-color page can pass 10 MB as PNG. Check the size estimate before saving, or choose 150 DPI.
- Pages with a painted white background stay white even with Transparent background ticked.
- Password-protected PDFs must be unlocked first.
- Very large pages are scaled to stay under about 16 million pixels per image, with the real DPI shown.
Frequently asked questions
Is PDF to PNG lossless?
The PNG itself is lossless. The page is drawn at the resolution you choose, so pick 300 DPI if you need fine detail for print.
Can I convert only one page to PNG?
Yes. Press Select none, click the page you want, and save. You get a single PNG file.
How are the files named?
Each image is named after the PDF with its page number, for example report-page-3.png, so pages stay in order.
Will form fields show in the PNG?
Yes. Filled-in form values are drawn into the image.
Can I get JPG or WebP instead?
Yes. Change Image format, or use PDF to JPG for smaller photo pages.
Is my PDF uploaded?
No. Everything happens in your browser on your device.
