What is an AZW3 file?
AZW3 is the file type for Kindle Format 8 (KF8), the format Amazon introduced for newer Kindles and reading apps. Inside, it works like an EPUB: HTML chapters, stylesheets and pictures, packed into a Kindle database. Many Kindle files hold both an old MOBI copy and a KF8 copy, and this tool reads the KF8 copy when it is there.
Older MOBI books convert with MOBI to PDF, and EPUB books with EPUB to PDF.
Does the PDF keep the book's layout?
It keeps the structure and styles: chapters start on new pages, headings, italics, indents and centered text come from the book's own stylesheet, and pictures stay in place. Pages are laid out fresh at the size you choose, so page breaks differ from a Kindle screen. Untick Keep the book's own styles for plain, even text instead.
| Part of the book | Result |
|---|---|
| Title and author | Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Lewis Carroll |
| Chapters rebuilt from skeletons and fragments | 19 files, about 29,800 words with the Gutenberg licence |
| The book's stylesheet | kept (option to switch it off) |
| Cover picture | kept |
| PDF at A5, 12 pt text | 156 pages, 654 KB, selectable text, about 4 seconds |
Why does it say my book has DRM?
Books bought from the Kindle store are encrypted so that only Amazon's apps and devices can open them. The tool reads the book's encryption setting and stops when the text is locked, because it cannot and should not unlock it. Free public domain books and books you made yourself are usually DRM-free and convert normally.
Project Gutenberg offers thousands of public domain books as free Kindle files.
Limits and fixes
- DRM-protected books cannot be converted.
- Huffman-compressed books, a compression some Kindle tools use, are not read yet; convert them to EPUB with an ebook app on your computer first.
- Links inside the book become plain text; links to websites keep working.
- Chinese, Japanese and Korean text is drawn with Noto Sans SC and KR. Japanese kanji use the Chinese letterforms, which differ slightly for some characters.
